Hollywood actor Will Ferrell is celebrated for his heartfelt depiction of friendship and support in his new Netflix documentary Will & Harper, which follows his journey with transgender best friend Harper Steele during her transition.
Hollywood comedian and actor Will Ferrell has been met with widespread acclaim for the poignant and authentic introduction of his transgender best friend, Harper Steele, in a new Netflix documentary titled Will & Harper. The project, which is a collaborative effort between Ferrell and Steele, offers viewers an intimate look into their evolving friendship against the backdrop of Harper’s transition journey.
The documentary follows the narrative of a heartwarming and revealing road trip that the duo embarked upon. The official synopsis explains: “When Will Ferrell finds out his close friend of 30 years is coming out as a trans woman, the two decide to embark on a cross-country road trip to process this new stage of their relationship in an intimate portrait of friendship, transition, and America.”
Will Ferrell has openly shared that before Harper came out as transgender, he had “zero ground knowledge” of the trans community. The two have shared a long-standing friendship since meeting on the set of Saturday Night Live in 1995. Reflecting on their bond, Ferrell recounted fond memories of attending Lakers games, whimsical road trips, and surprise visits to bars in costume.
In the documentary’s trailer, Ferrell thoughtfully considered the idea of the road trip as a means of support. “What if we went on a road trip together, giving her a chance to go into a cowboy bar or whatever places she misses, and I can be by her side and lend support as a friend? At the same time, it would give us a chance to reconnect and figure out what this transition means to our relationship,” he said.
The reception from viewers has been overwhelmingly positive. Comments from social media platforms show a significant emotional response, with many praising Ferrell for his supportive and educational approach. One viewer stated, “This film could save trans lives. Will Ferrell is a saint.” Another added, “Looks so funny, sweet, and real. I adore Ferrell. So much.”
More touching reactions included, “Will Ferrell deciding to educate himself and others as well as supporting and loving Harper unconditionally really sets a wonderful example.” Others expressed their eagerness to watch the documentary, with comments like, “I’m sitting here sobbing over the ‘Will & Harper’ documentary trailer,” and “Just heard about the documentary, and I’m sobbing just from the description.”
Ferrell has also shared insights into his initial response when Harper came out to him. In an interview with Variety Studio, he recounted an email Harper sent to her close friends three summers ago with the subject line: “Here’s a Weird One” where she announced her decision to transition. Ferrell remembered the strong support from their circle of friends, but also the need to ask meaningful questions on how they could assist her during this crucial time.
Ferrell elaborated on his journey of learning and understanding. “I had met trans people, but I didn’t have anyone personally in my life. So this was all new territory for me, which is why I think this film is so exciting for us to put out there in the world,” he said. Harper further explained, “It tells the story of a cis friend of a trans person who has to transition himself.”
