A release date for the highly anticipated romantic comedy A Nice Indian Boy has been officially announced. Based on Madhuri Shekar’s acclaimed play of the same name, the film features Karan Soni in the lead role as the socially reserved doctor Naveen, alongside Jonathan Groff, known for his role in Looking, who plays his fiancé Jay. The film chronicles Naveen’s journey as he brings Jay home to meet his traditional Indian family, prompting them to come to terms with accepting his white, orphan artist boyfriend while also assisting them in planning their dream wedding.
The film made a splash at both the SXSW and BFI Film Festival earlier this year, where audiences and critics praised its humour and the performances of Soni and Groff. It has also garnered a remarkable 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, signalling a strong reception even before its general release.
According to Variety, the film’s producers, Levantine Films and Wayfarer Studios, have partnered with Blue Harbor Entertainment for its US distribution, confirming that A Nice Indian Boy will hit cinemas on 5 April 2025. As of now, a release date for the UK and other international territories remains to be announced.
Roshan Sethi, the director of A Nice Indian Boy, shared his personal connection to the film in a statement to Gay Times, expressing the surreal feeling of creating a romantic comedy about love, acceptance, and family belonging, particularly after having been closeted himself just six years ago. “I am excited,” he stated, highlighting the significance of the project to him.
Andrew Calof, the president of production at Wayfarer Studios, added his enthusiasm, calling the film a “true labour of love, filled with heart and humour.” He expressed gratitude for the response received at various festivals worldwide and thanked their partners at Blue Harbor for their support in bringing the film to theatres across the nation.
Karan Soni, who plays the lead role, took to Instagram to share his excitement about the film’s release. In his heartfelt post, he expressed gratitude and mentioned the involvement of Mindy Kaling in promoting the film, stating, “I don’t think I need therapy anymore because this news is gonna fix all my problems.”
