Family Guy’s Peter heads for a gay old time on Fire Island

Family Guy is about to return for it’s 23rd season with some fruity episodes lined up to air. Among the highlights is a parody of the classic film Top Gun, which promises to feature an homage to the film’s iconic volleyball scene, described as “oiled-up.” This marks just the beginning of what executive producer Richard Appel characterises as a season rife with homoerotic themes.

In a particularly intriguing episode, Peter Griffin and his friends embark on a perilous sailing journey that culminates in their shipwreck on Fire Island. The storyline unfolds as Peter, frustrated by his wife Lois, expresses a desire to escape to a world populated solely by men—a wish that miraculously comes true. “They don’t know what Fire Island is, but they love it,” Appel shared with TVLine, shedding light on the comedic premise of the episode. Notably, the character of Julian, who serves as the island’s charismatic leader, will be portrayed by Cole Escola, known for his role in the acclaimed Broadway production Oh, Mary!

The new season seeks to diversify its comedic elements, but it will notably avoid revisiting certain political figures. Despite Peter’s previous involvement in a two-part arc during Donald Trump’s presidency, Appel confirmed that the show will not explore the former president’s second term. He elaborated, “That was an exceptional episode for us because you would think an episode about a political leader would depend on topical comedy, but we found a way to tell it where it seemed character-based.”

Moreover, the season will introduce a unique dynamic as Peter befriends controversial Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Appel succinctly summarised their connection, saying, “I like beer!” followed by a shared affinity for the same. This interaction leads to a lighter examination of Kavanaugh, as he idealises Peter’s seemingly simple life, prompting a narrative twist where Peter finds himself in the milieu of the Supreme Court, a step away from the show’s usual comedic territory.

As the season prepares to unfurl its myriad of storylines, viewers can anticipate a blend of social commentary and humorous escapades, reflecting the series’ enduring approach to satire. An enticing trailer has been released, providing a sneak peek at the antics awaiting fans.
