What happens when a middle-aged gay men gets lumbered with Four Mothers…?

The British Film Institute (BFI) has unveiled the trailer for Four Mothers, a new gay comedy directed by Darren Thornton set to hit cinemas in the UK and Ireland on 4 April.

The narrative centres on Edward, a novelist on the cusp of literary success, who finds himself in a challenging situation as he cares for his elderly mother, played by Fionnula Flanagan, following her recovery from a stroke. Edward’s life takes an unexpected turn when he is tasked with looking after not only his mother but also the mothers of his friends. This scenario unfolds after his friends, a group of gay men played by Gearóid Farrelly, Gordon Hickey, and Rory O’Neill—known as Panti Bliss, a prominent figure in the Irish drag scene and a vocal advocate for marriage equality—decide to leave their mothers on Edward’s doorstep while they attend Maspalomas Pride.

In an exclusive interview for the latest issue of Attitude magazine, Darren Thornton spoke about the film’s unique premise. He noted the importance of showcasing middle-aged gay men, stating, “I’m not gay, but me and Colin have the same friend group and are sort of part of the same community.” Thornton co-wrote the film with his brother Colin, who identifies as gay. Colin further emphasised the depth of the bond between mothers and their gay sons, referencing the often complex experience many gay men face when coming out to their parents. “For gay men of a certain age… that experience was quite fraught,” he noted. He explained that the relationship is often characterised by an intense healing process that strengthens the connection in a way that can be markedly different from that experienced by heterosexual men.

Four Mothers not only features a great storyline but also taps into broader themes of community, caregiving, and the intricate relationships between gay sons and their mothers.

Noah Fact Check Pro

The draft above was created using the information available at the time the story first
emerged. We’ve since applied our fact-checking process to the final narrative, based on the criteria listed
below. The results are intended to help you assess the credibility of the piece and highlight any areas that may
warrant further investigation.

Freshness check

Score:
8

Notes:
The narrative mentions a recent trailer release and an upcoming film premiere, indicating recent content. However, without specific dates for the trailer release, it’s difficult to confirm its absolute freshness.

Quotes check

Score:
6

Notes:
The quotes from Darren Thornton and Colin Thornton are presented as part of an exclusive interview, but there is no online evidence to confirm these are the earliest known references. The lack of prior online sources suggests these might be original quotes.

Source reliability

Score:
7

Notes:
The narrative originates from Attitude magazine, which is a reputable publication in the LGBTQ+ community. However, it is not a mainstream news outlet like the BBC or Financial Times.

Plausability check

Score:
9

Notes:
The claims about the film’s premise and release date are plausible and align with typical practices in the film industry. The narrative’s focus on community and caregiving themes also seems consistent with contemporary storytelling trends.

Overall assessment

Verdict (FAIL, OPEN, PASS): PASS

Confidence (LOW, MEDIUM, HIGH): MEDIUM

Summary:
The narrative appears to be relatively fresh, focusing on a recent film trailer release. While the quotes lack prior online references, they are presented as part of an exclusive interview. The source is reputable within its niche, and the film’s premise seems plausible. Overall, the content is likely accurate but lacks comprehensive verification across all aspects.
