At the Attitude Awards, Sir Elton John received the prestigious Legacy award, delivering a humorous jab at Elon Musk while highlighting his journey and commitment to fighting for LGBTQ+ rights.

In an evening filled with celebration and recognition at the Attitude Awards, legendary British music icon Sir Elton John delivered a memorable moment as he received the prestigious Legacy award. The event, honouring influential figures within the LGBTQ+ community, saw Sir Elton make a rare public appearance to accept the accolade, which was presented by his close friend and fellow musician, Ed Sheeran.

This award places Sir Elton as the second distinguished recipient, following its inaugural bestowal in 2017 when the Duke of Sussex accepted it on behalf of his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales.

During his acceptance speech, Sir Elton took a playful jab at Tesla CEO and X owner Elon Musk. As he remarked on the award itself, he humorously asked, “What does A stand for? Arsehole comes to mind. But let’s not talk about Elon Musk tonight – let’s have a good time.”

The event also spotlighted other luminaries across various fields. Eurovision Song Contest winner Nemo was recognised as Person of the Year. Additionally, Lulu, who famously represented the UK in the 1969 Eurovision, was honoured with the Honorary Gay award. The Culture award was presented to Jessica Gunning, known for her role in Baby Reindeer, while the posthumous Inspiration award was received by Esther Ghey on behalf of her daughter, Brianna Ghey, a transgender teenager whose tragic death in Warrington last year had a profound impact on many.

A poignant part of Sir Elton’s speech reflected his own journey and life as a gay man, highlighting his personal fulfilment and pride in his marriage to David Furnish since 2014, with whom he shares two sons, Zachary and Elijah. He expressed gratitude for the rights he enjoys and voiced steadfast commitment to fighting for those still denied similar rights, saying, “I intend to fight for those rights until the day I die.”

Recently achieving the rare EGOT status by winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony, Sir Elton continues his illustrious career with ongoing projects. His upcoming endeavours include composing music for the musical adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada and the premiere of his new documentary Elton John: Never Too Late, set to debut on Disney+ on 13th December.

In a candid reflection shared with Attitude magazine, Sir Elton addressed the closing chapter of his touring career. Recollecting his monumental performances, especially at Glastonbury and his final show in Stockholm, he said, “I’m so happy. I understand why Adele wants to stop because there’s more to life.” With over 5,000 shows under his belt, he conveyed a desire to cherish time with his family, stating that his sons and husband “needed me, and I need them.”
