Shawn Mendes, the Canadian pop sensation, has been generating buzz ahead of the release of his fourth studio album titled Shawn, slated for release on 15 November. The singer, known for his chart-topping tracks and boy-next-door image, has started performing some of the unreleased songs from the highly anticipated album. Among these is a song titled The Mountain, which touch on the ongoing speculation surrounding Mendes’ sexuality.

In a recent performance in Woodstock, New York, Mendes introduced The Mountain, describing it as “one of my favourites off the album.” The song features lyrics that address the public scrutiny he has faced over his personal life. One line from the song states, “Some days/I have a change of heart/You can say what you need to say/You can say I’m too young/You can say I’m too old/You can say I like girls or boys, whatever fits your mold.” This particular lyric has sparked significant conversation, as it openly addresses the rumours and speculation about his sexuality that have followed him since his rise to fame.

Despite being linked only to female romantic partners publicly, Mendes has often found his sexuality to be a topic of discussion in the media and among fans. Clips of the performance, including a poignant fan recording shared by @theliyahrich, have gone viral, further fuelling conversations around Mendes’ personal expression and the lyrical content of his new music.

Before performing, Mendes candidly spoke to the audience about how speculation and rumours about his personal life, including those regarding his dating history and even bizarre suggestions of him being involved in a cult, have affected him over the years. He shared that these rumours once bothered him but that he has since found peace and acceptance by “exploring realms” and experimenting with “a little bit of mushrooms,” hinting at a personal journey of growth and self-discovery.
