Pride Month has been officially replaced in the USA

June used to be Pride Month. The month when we could all – gay, straight, trans, cis – come together to celebrate diversity, pride and the wonder of living, especially in schools and education facilities. Then came Trump.

The Trump administration has declared June Title IX Month – catchy! How do you even say that? – sidelining the traditional Pride Month celebrations that honour the LGBTQ+ community’s ongoing fight for equality. The announcement, reported by various sources including the Daily Wire, reflects a broader strategy aimed at reversing policies established by the previous administration. Instead of celebrating Pride, the Department of Education plans to focus on the 53rd anniversary of Title IX, a landmark law aimed at preventing sex-based discrimination in educational institutions.

The Department is also launching initiatives that aim to rectify what they consider to be the misapplication of Title IX during the prior administration, which they say promoted gender ideology and other contentious educational frameworks, including critical race theory and DEI (diversity, equity, inclusion) agendas. Critics argue that this change signifies a move away from inclusivity, potentially alienating LGBTQ+ students and dismantling hard-won protections they have secured in educational settings.

The Department of Education has also set up investigations into high-profile cases from the previous administration that are now deemed ‘problematic’ by current officials. One investigation focuses on the University of Wyoming’s decision to allow a transgender woman to join a sorority reserved for biological females, a decision that led to legal challenges from the sorority. In another case, the Jefferson County Public Schools in Colorado are under scrutiny for reportedly facilitating overnight stays for students based on their declared gender identity, with claims that parents were misled regarding the definitions applied to gender.

Adding to the complexity of this evolving narrative, the Department of Education has also initiated an investigation into Denver Public Schools following the conversion of a girls’ restroom into an all-gender facility. Oh no!

As litigation unfolds in states such as Wyoming and Florida, state officials have taken strong stances against the Biden administration’s proposed changes to Title IX, asserting that these new interpretations contravene both state laws and the original intent of the federal legislation.

  2. https://www.ilgiornale.it/news/politica-estera/trump-cancella-pride-month-ecco-cosa-verr-celebrato-giugno-2488674.html – The article reports that the Trump administration has declared June as ‘Title IX Month’ to commemorate the 53rd anniversary of the landmark law, replacing the traditional Pride Month celebrations. The Department of Education plans to highlight actions taken to protect women’s sports and spaces, aiming to reverse the previous administration’s interpretation of Title IX. This move contrasts with Pride Month’s focus on gender ideology, critical race theory, and DEI (diversity, equity, inclusion) agendas. Additionally, the Department is investigating two high-profile cases from the prior administration in Colorado and Wyoming.
  3. https://apnews.com/article/5089c11c01319104078abf7b951b4373 – The U.S. Department of Education is investigating Denver Public Schools for alleged discrimination after converting a girls’ restroom into an all-gender restroom while retaining a boys-only bathroom. The department’s concern is that this may violate Title IX, which prohibits sex-based discrimination. Denver Public Schools defended the decision, emphasizing the student-led initiative aimed at ensuring privacy and inclusivity for all students. This investigation marks a significant shift from the previous administration’s interpretation of Title IX to include LGBTQ+ protections.
  4. https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-education-department-investigating-denver-schools-over-all-gender-bathroom-2025-01-28/ – The U.S. Department of Education is investigating Denver Public Schools for potential discrimination against women and girls after converting a female restroom at East High School into an all-gender bathroom. Denver Public Schools stated that the change was driven by a student-led initiative to enhance inclusivity and provide a comfortable environment for all students. The investigation is based on Title IX, which prohibits sex-based discrimination in federally funded education programs. This probe reflects the current administration’s stance on recognizing only two sexes and not tolerating discrimination.
  5. https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-department-secures-agreement-wyoming-school-district-address-discrimination-based – The U.S. Department of Justice announced a settlement agreement with Teton County School District #1 in Wyoming to resolve an investigation into alleged peer harassment based on sex and disability. The investigation focused on the district’s response to students’ complaints of sexual harassment and reports of a broader school climate where female students were subjected to sexualized insults and derogatory comments. The agreement aims to address the district’s ineffective responses to such complaints and improve policies and training on supporting students affected by harassment.
  6. https://edu.wyoming.gov/state-superintendent-degenfelder-joins-with-florida-education-commissioner-manny-diaz-jr-in-fighting-proposed-federal-title-ix-rule-changes/ – Wyoming State Superintendent Megan Degenfelder, along with Florida Education Commissioner Manny Diaz Jr. and other state school leaders, signed a letter opposing the U.S. Department of Education’s recent Title IX notice of proposed rulemaking affecting K-12 and collegiate athletics. The proposed rule seeks to prohibit state laws like Wyoming’s Senate File 133, which bans biological males from participating in sports against biological females. Degenfelder argues that the proposed rule change is inconsistent with federal and state laws and contradicts the intent of Title IX.
