Michelin-recognized Nook restaurant in Canton to close after five years

Deb and Phill Lewis, owners of Nook restaurant in Canton, Cardiff, announce closure due to operational challenges, to be replaced by Hiraeth, another Michelin-rated establishment, amidst a tough year for the city’s hospitality sector.

Nook, an independent restaurant recognized by the Michelin Guide, will close its doors in Canton, Cardiff, on June 30 after nearly five years of operation. The closure is attributed to an “impasse” faced by owners Deb and Phill Lewis. Nook will be replaced by Hiraeth, another Michelin-rated establishment, which will open later this summer following venue refurbishments.

This announcement arrives amid a challenging year for Cardiff’s hospitality sector, which has seen several closures, including Deborah and Phill’s other restaurant, Kindle, earlier this year. The couple cited high operating costs and decreased patronage as significant factors in these decisions.

Despite this closure, Nook will continue as a pop-up location, Nook By The River, at Llandaff Rowing Club in 2025. Hiraeth, which was founded in Llysworney and has earned a place in the Michelin Guide and two AA Rosettes, will move from its current location at Court Colman Manor in Bridgend to Cardiff. The last trading day at Court Colman Manor is set for July 27.

Nook’s closure was announced with a message of gratitude from its owners. They expressed their mixed emotions but highlighted that the transition allows them to end on a high note. Hiraeth’s chefs and co-owners, Lewis Dwyer and Andy Aston, are looking forward to joining Cardiff’s vibrant hospitality scene.
