Celine Dion in talks for Eurovision return after nearly 40 years

Celine Dion is reportedly in discussions to make a return to Eurovision for the 2025 Song Contest, nearly four decades after her iconic win in 1988. The world screams! The Canadian singer, renowned for her powerful vocals, clinched victory representing Switzerland with the ballad Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi [pictured].

The upcoming Eurovision will see the competition return to Switzerland following Nemo’s victory with The Code in Malmo, Sweden with speculation that Dion could grace the stage, contingent on her health status.

Dion made her first public performance since revealing her health condition during the Olympic opening ceremony in Paris last year and recent reports indicate that organisers are actively pursuing her appearance as an interval act for the prestigious event. According to The Sun, executive producers Reto Peritz and Moritz Stadler have confirmed communication with her team, although they emphasised that a final decision hinges on Dion’s wellbeing. “We won’t know until a few weeks beforehand whether she feels fit enough,” they stated.

In her documentary, I Am: Celine Dion, which premiered last year, she candidly discussed her struggle with severe muscle spasms—a condition that has profoundly impacted her life and career. These spasms have been so debilitating that they have led to broken ribs. Describing her experience, she likened living with the condition to being in a chokehold, mentioning: “It feels like if I point my feet, it will stay in (that position), or if I cook—because I love to cook—my fingers, my hands will get in position.”

Dion elaborated further on the severity of her symptoms, noting, “Sometimes when it’s very severe, it can break some ribs.” The condition she has spoken about is known as Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS), characterised by muscle stiffness and spasms. While there is currently no cure, treatments including muscle relaxants and sedatives provide some relief.

Whatever happens, we can dream.
