Jonathan Bailey the only gay in People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive awards

In a highly anticipated event, People magazine has revealed its winners for the 2024 Sexiest Man Alive Readers’ Choice Poll. This annual poll, known for its celebration of male celebrity appeal, has sparked discussion this year due to its apparent lack of diversity, particularly in terms of representation from the LGBTQ+ community.

The list comprises 15 categories, with out actor Jonathan Bailey standing out as the only openly gay man to be recognised. Bailey, known for his roles in Bridgerton [pictured, Netflix] and the upcoming musical film Wicked, was voted Sexiest Fiyero. This character is his latest role, and his recognition has been highlighted on the publication’s social media, where his portrayal has been described as “Wicked-ly handsome”.

However, the results have raised questions about the absence of other prominent LGBTQ+ figures in the entertainment industry. Talents such as Colman Domingo, Omar Apollo, Ncuti Gatwa, Joel Kim Booster, and Matt Bomer, who have made significant impacts through their various performances and public profiles, were notably absent from the list.

Other categories stirred the debate on representation further. Chip Gaines was voted “Sexiest Handy Man”, overshadowing queer personalities like Bobby Berk and Jeremiah Brent, well known for their roles on shows like ‘Queer Eye’. Similarly, the “Gen SeXiest” title went to Shemar Moore, though some have argued that Colman Domingo’s elegance and style at 54 deserved the accolade.

A surprising turn in the category of “Sexiest Dog Dad” was noted, where Russell Tovey, known for his affection for his pet Rocky, did not make the list. In what appears to be a controversial win, Joe Jonas claimed the title of “Makes BRAT Look Sexiest”, surpassing Troye Sivan, despite Sivan’s notable influence and success in music this year.

The category of “Sexiest Tattoos” was awarded to Jeremy Allen White, famously known for his role in ‘The Bear’, despite having only a few tattoos. Fans of Ricky Martin, Orville Peck, and Kyle Krieger have expressed their surprise at this decision, hinting at a possible misunderstanding of White’s character tattoos in the show as real.

Harry Styles took home the title for “Sexiest Musician”, an accolade that left out artists like Omar Apollo, Frank Ocean, and Ricky Martin, all of whom have made significant contributions to music in recent years and have substantial fan bases.
