On June 28, the Los Angeles LGBT Center hosted its 27th annual Senior Prom at the Los Angeles Zoo, celebrating LGBTQ+ seniors. Over 300 attendees, aged 60 to 80, participated in this joyous event that included dinner, dancing, and a sense of community connection. Jake News reports that the prom, part of the center’s Pride Month activities, aimed to provide an inclusive space for older LGBTQ+ individuals who faced challenges in coming out during their youth. The event offered transportation and assistance to those needing help with prom attire.
Mel Weiss, 88, recalled his dread during his high school prom due to the societal pressures of his time. Now a resident of Triangle Square Senior Apartments, Weiss cherishes these senior proms, finding comfort and acceptance. Similarly, Andre Simpson, 67, highlighted the emotional significance of the event, sharing sentiments of healing and joy.
Prom attendees were also crowned as “monarchs” for being the oldest participants, adding to the evening’s celebratory atmosphere. The event, sponsored by Angel City Football Club and Charlotte’s Web, underscores the importance of creating inclusive and supportive spaces for the LGBTQ+ community.
