Working on your 2024 diaries yet?

We’re nothing if not previous, so we’ve already put aside a decent chunk of 2024 – and considerable dollar bills for sensible yet stylish layering – for a jolly to what might just be the most exciting hotel opening of that year.

Six Senses Svart – perched (more on this later) above the Holandsfjorden fjord in Norway - will be a number of firsts. It will be the first Six Senses in Scandinavia. It will be the first net energy-positive destination in the world. It will set the new standard in carbon-neutral travel. And it will be completely off-grid, which isn’t a first if we’re being pedantic but it’s still mighty impressive and we’ve not even got down to the nitty-gritty yet.

Now for some of that nitty and/or gritty. The perched thing; Six Senses Svart is being built on poles, ensuring minimal land impact and seabed disruption. The circular design is inspired by the ‘fiskehjell’ (an A-shaped wooden structure for drying fish) and the ‘rorbu’, a traditional coastal fisherman’s cabin. It will harvest more than enough solar energy to cover both the hotel and its construction, meaning the hotel is independent from the power grid. It will feature a Net Zero Lab, where staff will develop technology that will lessen the environmental impact of travel. And its Marketplace restaurant will be zero-waste and locally sourced. Delicious, nutritious and kind to trees.

And, because this is Six Senses we’re talking about, the wellness offering will include a world-beating spa as well as programmes to improve sleep and nutrition. Then there’s the Alchemy Bar, which is less booze, more turning local flora into scents and scrubs. And then, like, just look at it!

‘Building a unique environment through cutting-edge design and superior craftsmanship comes with clear obligations. Creating a sustainable destination through an optimised resort operation requires us to collaborate with the right partner,’ says Ivaylo Lefterov, Svart Development Director. ‘Six Senses shares the same ethos and ambition, to redefine bespoke travel through technological innovation, carbon-neutral approach, ground-breaking design, and an exceptional guest journey.’
