As My Best Friend’s Wedding approaches its 25th anniversary, the film’s enduring charm remains a testament to its beloved status in the realm of romantic comedies. The 1997 hit, directed by P.J. Hogan and starring Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz, Dermot Mulroney, and Rupert Everett, continues to resonate with audiences and cast members alike, marking a significant milestone in cinematic history.

In a recent interview with E!’s Daily Pop, Julia Roberts shared insights into what has made the film such a lasting favourite. The actress, currently promoting her role in Starz’s upcoming Watergate-themed limited series Gaslit, highlighted the universal appeal of the story. At its core, the film follows Julianne (Roberts), who realises she has romantic feelings for her best friend Michael (Mulroney), just as he is about to marry Kimmy (Diaz). To complicate matters, JuliannePretends to be engaged to her other friend, George (Rupert Everett), leading to a series of comedic and heartfelt moments.

Roberts attributed much of the film’s success to the genuine chemistry shared by its cast including Rupert Everett in a landmark gay role. ‘So many people see themselves in the movie because of the relatable themes of friendship and unrequited love,’ she explained. ‘And I think we got incredibly lucky. None of us knew each other before making the film, yet the chemistry on set was just right—it really just worked.’

Reflecting on the relationships forged during filming, Roberts revealed that the camaraderie extends beyond the director’s chair. ‘Everyone in the cast really liked each other,’ she said. ‘Dermot and I are still great friends—we talk all the time. That’s a testament to the wonderful experience we all had making this film together.’

Madonna, rumour has it, was so impressed by Rupert in the film that she decided she wanted to do a gay/straight rom/com with him and The Next Best Thing was conceived.
