In an exploration of the current political climate surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in America, Mark Wingfield, the executive director and publisher of Baptist News Global, contends that claims regarding the demise of DEI efforts are greatly exaggerated. As Donald Trump assumes a central role in the political discourse, stories are circulating that suggest a significant shift away from LGBTQ+ inclusion, affirmative action, and other social equity initiatives, akin to a regression to the social norms of the mid-20th century.

According to Wingfield, the perception that Trump has a sweeping mandate following his return to power is not supported by the numbers. He cites UCLA public policy and political science expert Mark Peterson, who points out that Trump won the presidency with one of the slimmest margins in history, paired with a House majority that is among the thinnest in a century. Peterson observes that this situation starkly contrasts with the more robust mandates enjoyed by former presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama upon their respective elections. “It is wishful thinking by people who narrowly won a battle and think they’ve won a war,” Peterson stated.

Despite the aspirations of conservative evangelicals to revert to a past era, Wingfield argues that such efforts are not consistent with biblical teachings. He suggests that the teachings and actions of Jesus promote a message of inclusivity and social justice, emphasising that Jesus did not aim to create an un-woke society. Instead, he explains that being “woke” aligns with being aware of systemic injustices and striving for a human society that reflects the values of love, compassion, and equity.

Wingfield highlights Jesus’ declaration at the synagogue in Nazareth, as recorded in the Gospel of Luke, which lays out his ministry’s mission: to bring good news to the poor, liberate the captives, and ease the burdens of the oppressed. Throughout his life, Wingfield argues, Jesus championed the marginalised, upheld women, and displayed compassion towards all individuals, a notion that is conspicuously absent in some contemporary Christian rhetoric.

Moreover, he points out the disparity between the teachings of Jesus and the actions of some in the American church, suggesting that many have equated their political agenda with true discipleship. As Wingfield critiques this dynamic, he emphasises that legislative actions taken by figures like Mike Johnson in the House of Representatives do not inherently capture the essence of Jesus’s message, highlighting the distinction between political power and spiritual truth.

He concludes with a poignant reminder that “squashing a ‘woke’ agenda can’t change the words of Jesus himself,” asserting that the core message of love and inclusion remains unchanged despite political opposition. In this context, Wingfield’s analysis provides a platform for further discussion about the intersection of faith, politics, and social justice, particularly in relation to the rights and recognition of the LGBTQ+ community.
