The adult entertainment industry has unveiled a campaign titled Hands Off My Porn, which directly targets the potential implications of Donald Trump’s presidential run concerning the production and distribution of pornographic content. This initiative surfaces amidst concerns over Project 2025, a proposal by the conservative Heritage Foundation that outlines policies for a prospective Republican administration, including controversial plans to ban pornography.

The campaign, reported to have a budget of $100,000, will primarily leverage online platforms to spread its message. Advertisements intended to caution against conservative efforts to prohibit adult content will be featured on websites frequented by users of such material. The drive aims to reach a particular demographic—namely younger males—who, according to various polls, are more likely to support Trump. The focus is on educating them on the potential consequences a Trump presidency might entail, especially regarding personal freedoms related to adult content.

These advertisements will be strategically placed in key battleground states—areas that are pivotal in determining the election’s outcome. These states include Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona, and Nevada. The ads will also direct viewers to the “Hands Off My Porn” website, a portal that provides detailed testimonials regarding the potential impact of Project 2025 on the adult film industry.

A significant factor in the campaign’s strategy is its direct appeal to straight male audiences, featuring straight actors who serve as spokespeople. Holly Randall, a porn producer closely involved with the campaign, highlighted the frequent use of misleading stereotypes by right-wing factions, such as claims that pornography attempts to undermine traditional gender identities.

Despite its focus, the campaign has received backing from within the gay adult film community, although they have not been a focal point of the initiative. Michael Boston, a gay performer, has lauded the campaign’s effort to highlight crucial voting issues, arguing that these ads touch upon broader free speech debates. Boston also suggested that disseminating short, impactful video clips summarizing the risks associated with Project 2025 could enhance the campaign’s reach on social media platforms.

Other performers, such as Damien and Dom King, also expressed support, asserting that the advertising campaign’s approach of targeting regular viewers of adult content is sound, as it speaks to audiences already engaging with the material. King emphasized the importance of the upcoming election, pointing out its implications not just for economic or foreign policy concerns, but also for personal liberties, LGBTQ+ rights, and freedom of expression.

Project 2025’s proposal for a pornography ban extends beyond outlawing explicit content. The breadth of its definition of “pornography” is such that it could potentially outlaw various forms of expression related to LGBTQ+ identities and gender nonconformity—ranging from artistic depictions to educational literature on sexual health. The initiative’s scope threatens a variety of professions and individuals engaged in the arts, education, health, and information dissemination.

Liz Plank, a co-founder of Hotties for Harris, has urged Democratic candidates to more vocally oppose the proposal’s implications. Plank advocates for questioning young male voters on their willingness to have personal internet usage scrutinized or face legal repercussions for consuming adult content. The campaign underlines concerns over a potential erosion of privacy and freedom of expression, should Project 2025 be enacted.

Lil Buff Bro, another adult performer, underscores the importance of clarity about the campaign’s messaging. He stresses the need to highlight the broader societal repercussions of the proposals, which could criminalize common activities associated with personal privacy. He cautions that the implications of such legislation could lead to a dystopian reality where even private, consensual behaviour might be policed.
