Caitlyn Jenner, a prominent figure within the transgender community and former Olympic gold medalist, has faced a significant backlash following her continued support for Donald Trump given the President’s controversial stance on gender identity. Jenner has publicly backed Trump since his election campaign in 2016, making her allegiance clear even as his administration has been marked by policies that many within the LGBTQ+ community view as regressive.

On Inauguration Day, Jenner expressed her support for Trump via a post on the social media platform X, stating, “Congratulations Mr. President. Thanks be to God!” This message met with immediate criticism from many members of the LGBTQ+ community, who have questioned her loyalties. Critics directed scornful comments at Jenner, with some reverting to using her birth name, Bruce, and others accusing her of hypocrisy for aligning herself with a president perceived as antithetical to the interests of transgender individuals.

Responses included pointed remarks about Trump’s executive order, which asserts that only two genders exist, male and female. One commenter on X asked, “How’s it feel to be a guy again?” while another noted, “You’re a disgrace to your entire community.” The vitriol continued with derogatory images from Jenner’s past surfacing in responses that highlighted her pre-transition identity.

Jenner’s social media engagement on the day was complimented by series of Instagram posts expressing happiness in her support for Trump. However, these posts too garnered derogatory comments, prompting her to restrict the comments on certain posts to mitigate the backlash she was facing on X.

The executive order signed by Trump on Inauguration Day has been described as a reaffirmation of his longstanding views about gender identity. In his inaugural address, Trump proclaimed, “As of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders – male and female,” a statement that received applause from attendees in the Capitol Rotunda. The executive order itself elaborated that the federal government would no longer recognise any other variations, asserting that “these sexes are not changeable and are grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality.”

Despite the wave of criticism that has come her way, Jenner has not yet publicly commented on Trump’s recent statements or the specifics of the executive order. Her past actions, particularly her condemnation of Trump’s transgender military ban, suggest a complex relationship with the former president. In 2017, she spoke out against the ban, emphasising the service of transgender individuals in the military and arguing against policies that could endanger them.

In recent elections, Jenner has also navigated a turbulent political landscape, including her gubernatorial bid in California during a recall election against Governor Gavin Newsom, which resulted in only a 1% share of the vote. Notably, as she continues to engage with politics, Jenner has suggested the possibility of challenging former Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2026 gubernatorial race.
