Move over, Hollywood—it’s time for some queerness to take centre stage in the Southern Gothic thriller, “Ganymede”… the word apparently describes an unrepentant gay man. From the creative minds of Colby Holt and Sam Probst, Ganymede delivers a spine-tingling tale that stitches together themes of queer desire, family pressures, and a touch of the supernatural into a compelling cinematic experience.
Starring the fabulously talented Jordan Doww (“Reach”) and Pablo Castelblanco (“Alaska Daily,” “Happy’s Place”), along with the ever-funny David Koechner (“Anchorman,” “Cheap Thrills”), the legendary Robyn Lively (“Teen Witch”), Joe Chrest (“Stranger Things”), and the up-and-coming Marissa Reyes (“Raven’s Home”), this film promises a mix of tension, emotions, and a dash of camp perfect for our LGBTQ+ community.
Set in a picturesque small town, the story follows a wrestling star, whose heart is a ticking rainbow time bomb—he’s fallen for an openly gay classmate. But it’s not just sweet queer romance of the Heartstopper variety we’re in for. Alongside the myriad pressures from his legacy-obsessed father, our young protagonist starts being haunted by a grotesque creature, which creeps into his thoughts, unsettling his nights and days alike.
Directors Colby Holt and Sam Probst have sculpted a narrative that picks at the threads of queer adolescent turmoil and the complexities of familial expectations, all while maintaining an eerie, unsettling Southern Gothic ambiance. The remarkable Stephen Stanley (“What Lies Below”), Kevin Greene, and Mark Goldberg have produced this gem in association with Iris Indie International. The executive producer dream team of Geneva Wasserman of dentsu (“Spiderhead”), J Craig Gordon, Kevin Stanberry, and Dan Discenza ensured every fright and tender moment glistens on screen.
“Ganymede” had its world premiere at the 41st Reeling International Film Festival, dazzling audiences and clinching the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature Film. Not stopping there, it also snatched the Pride Award at the Chattanooga Film Festival, further cementing its impact on the queer film circuit.
